Obituary

Phillip H. Schmiedeskamp, 73, of Quincy, formerly of Mendon, passed away at 5:04 PM, Friday, December 17, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Home in Quincy.

He was born on November 4, 1948, in Quincy, the son of Donald L. and Arlene F. (Hendricks) Schmiedeskamp.  He married Barbie VaLeu on March 3, 1979, in Mendon.

Surviving are his mother Arlene Schmiedeskamp of Quincy, three children Kari (Corey) Luckhaupt of Fowler, Kraig (Kelsey) Schmiedeskamp of Camp Point and Kesi (Brock) Brackensick of  Ursa, eight grandchildren Gage Bruns, Brayden and Brennan Luckhaupt, Kiptyn and Kiya Schmiedeskamp, Braylee, Brynlee, Bexlee Brackensick, one brother Kurt Schmiedeskamp of  Quincy, and a special cousin Juanita Moss of Quincy.   He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers Jeffrey and Leslie Schmiedeskamp.

Phil attended the one room Standard School, was a 1966 graduate of Unity High School and a 1971 graduate of Central Missouri State University.

He worked in the shipping department for Moorman’s.  He later became an over-the-road truck driver for McNay Truck Lines in Quincy and Schwerman Trucking in Meredosia, retiring due to ill health.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Mendon and attended St. Edward the Confessor Catholic church, for special family events.  He was also a lifetime member of the NRA.  He was a former member of the Unity Jaycees, 4-H and FFA.  When he was younger, he won many awards showing Hereford cattle at both county and state fairs. He always attended the Adams County Fair. He enjoyed hunting and would cruise the backroads looking for deer.  He was a big Elvis fan.  His family would join him on special fishing trips to his happy place, the Bow Narrows Camp in Red Lake, Ontario, Canada, where he loved catching Walleye and Northern Pike fish.  He was an election judge for Honey Creek Township and volunteered at Blessing Hospital’s Hospitality House. He was known to be a frequent patron at the Gem City Pizzeria and at the round table at the Northside Diner in Mendon, solving all of the world’s problems.  His most special moments were spending time with his family and attending the grandkids sporting events.

Services will be at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at the Hunter Funeral Home in Mendon with Father Scott Snider officiating.  Interment will follow in the Ellington Home Cemetery, in rural Quincy.  Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at the Hunter Funeral Home in Mendon.  Memorials are suggested to the Adams County Fair.  The family would like to thank the caregivers at Blessing Hospital and a special thank you to Matt with Blessing Hospice.
